Apple has officially rolled out iOS 18, and it’s being called the company’s “biggest upgrade in history.” The highly anticipated update brings a host of new features, including advanced home screen customization, a redesigned Photos app, major improvements to the Messages app, and the debut of a Passwords app aimed at bolstering security. Users can now download the new system by navigating to Settings > General > Software Updates and following the prompts.
However, not all iPhone models are compatible with iOS 18. iPhones older than the XS, including the iPhone X, 8, 7, and first-generation SE, are left behind, sparking envy among users of these older devices. But if you own a third-generation iPhone SE or newer, you’re in luck and can take advantage of iOS 18’s features.
Customization Redefined
One of the standout features of iOS 18 is its advanced home screen customization. Gone are the days when apps and widgets had to be arranged in uniform rows. Now, users have the freedom to place icons anywhere on the screen, allowing them to create unique layouts and make their wallpaper more visible. Additionally, a new dark mode for app icons and color tint options will allow even further customization.
Photos App Redesign
Apple has also introduced the biggest redesign ever for the Photos app. It now features a simplified single view that combines a photo grid and a dates grid, making it easier to find and organize images. New filters allow users to sort their photos by categories such as screenshots or groups, while the introduction of a Recovered album will house photos and videos outside the main gallery, helping reduce the risk of database corruption.
Enhanced Control Center
iOS 18 also revamps the Control Center, enabling users to separate it into function groups, such as Home or Media, and even resize widgets. For the first time, users can edit which Control Center widgets appear on the lock screen, giving more control over quick access tools.
Passwords App for Added Security
Another major addition is the Passwords app, which serves as a secure hub for storing passwords, passkeys, and verification codes. All information is protected by end-to-end encryption, and users can lock it using Face ID or Touch ID. The app also provides alerts for weak passwords or those involved in a data breach, enhancing user security.
Messages App Overhaul
The Messages app has seen several improvements, including support for Rich Communication Services (RCS), allowing for richer messaging when communicating with non-Apple devices. New text effects, such as Shake, Nod, Ripple, and Explode, bring flair to conversations. Additionally, users can now schedule messages to be sent at a later time and send messages via satellite when no cellular or Wi-Fi connection is available.
How to Get iOS 18
If you’re wondering whether your device is compatible, check if it runs iOS 17; the same requirements apply. Once you’ve confirmed compatibility, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If iOS 18 is available, tap Download and Install, enter your passcode, and agree to the Terms and Conditions. The installation typically takes around 30 minutes.
