Users Report Significant Reduction in SSD Read Speeds After Windows 11 Update KB5023706.
A recent Windows 11 update, version 22H2 – KB5023706, has caused many users to experience decreased read speeds of their SSDs. This issue has been reported by several users, and it is affecting many SSD manufacturer products. However, Microsoft is aware of the problem and has already provided some initial workarounds.
Currently, users can uninstall the update to restore the previous performance of their SSDs. Additionally, Microsoft suggests using copy programs that do not use the cache manager, or entering specific commands at the command prompt, such as Robocopy and Xcopy. An official update to fix the issue is expected to be released soon.
It’s worth noting that this SSD issue should not be affected by the latest Windows update, ‘Moment 2.’ This update has introduced several improvements to enhance the user experience, including the implementation of Bing Chat based on ChatGPT, which is available in the system tray.
However, users may experience a separate issue when copying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files. This issue may take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2, particularly when copying files to Windows 11 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB). While this issue may affect local file copies, it’s less likely to do so for Windows devices used by consumers in their homes or small offices. Microsoft is aware of this issue and is working on a fix.
Users who have experienced a significant reduction in their SSD read speeds after updating to Windows 11, version 22H2, should consider uninstalling the update or using specific commands to improve their SSD performance. The ‘Moment 2’ update should not affect this issue, but users may experience a separate issue when copying large files. Microsoft is aware of both issues and is working on releasing fixes soon.
