ÛÛ² From inside the book's jacket: ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² Fraud and piracy of products and ideas have become common ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² in the early twenty-first century, as opportunities to ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² commit them expand, and technology makes fraud and piracy ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² easy to carry out. In Combating Piracy: Intellectual ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² Property Theft and Fraud, Jay S. Albanese and his ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² contributors provide new analyses of intellectual property ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² theft and how perpetrators innovate and adapt in response ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² to shifting opportunities. The cases described here ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² illustrate the wide-ranging nature of the activity, and ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² the spectrum of persons involved in piracy of intellectual ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² property. Intellectual property theft includes stolen ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents, which ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² represent the creative work of individuals for which ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² others cannot claim credit. The distributors of books, ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² movies, music, and other forms of intellectual property ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² pay for this right, and those who distribute this work ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² without compensation to its creator effectively hijack or ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² "pirate" that property without the owner's or ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² distributor's permission. The problem has grown to the ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² point where most software in many parts of the world is ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² pirated. The World Health Organization estimates that 10 ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² percent of all pharmaceuticals available worldwide are ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² counterfeit. Such widespread fraud illustrates the global ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² reach of the problem and the need for international ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² remedies that include changed attitudes, public education, ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² increasing the likelihood of apprehension, and reducing ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² available opportunities. The contributors show that piracy ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² is a form of fraud, a form of organized crime, a ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² white-collar crime, a criminal activity with causes we can ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² isolate and prevent, and a global problem. This book ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² examines each of these perspectives to determine how they ÛÛ²
ÛÛ² contrbute to our understanding of the issues involved. Û
