So we come to the end of the premier league season and i thought I would do a quick review of how things have gone.
Manchester United won their 18th league title to match Liverpool's record of top division titles. They did not do it in style however, barely getting out of second gear all season and scraping results with lucky deflections, last minute goals and a few very poor refereeing decisions.
Liverpool ran UTD very close this year closer than a lot of people expected and maybe even deserved to win outright. Unfortunately too many home draw against lesser teams really cost them and injuries to key players did not help their cause either.
Chelsea had a very up and down season. Scolari was supposed to be the man to bring back the glory days from under Mourinho the special one and they started the season in style gaining 7 straight away wins at the start of the season. I doubt anyone really knows what went on behind the scenes but results took a turn for the worst and eventually Scolari was sacked. 3rd place was probably the best they could hope for after that.
Arsenal and Villa fought out a very interesting battle for 4th spot. Villa managed to break into the top 4 for several months of the season after a magnificent run of form along with arsenal putting in some very disappointing performances. It all turned around after Villa threw away the UEFA cup, they had the chance to go 8 points clear of Arsenal at one stage, only to concede 2 last minute goals to Stoke City and the slide began there. Arsenal's January signing of Andrei Arshavin seemed to revitalize the gunners and it was to be a one horse race for the final champions league place for the rest of the season.
Everton had a terrible start to the season, 2-3 defeat to blackburn on the opening day and no win in their first 5 home games left them hovering in the bottom half. Things seemed to turn around after a spirited fightback v Man Utd and their season took off from there and ended with them pipping villa to 5th spot and reaching the final of the FA cup.
Fulham did an excellent job of securing the final Europa spot this season. Roy Hodgsons side were 20 minutes from the championship last year but now find themselves 7th in the best league in the world. Definite contender for manager and team of the season.
Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur had fairly disappointing seasons overall. City had the marquee signing of Robinho right on the transfer deadline and with multi billionaire owners, they expected a push for 4th, only to find themselves slipping into the relegation zone at one point in the season. They did recover from that but it was not quite enough to make a punch for europe. Spurs had a horrific start to the season, 2 points from 8 games before Mr Houdini himself took charge of the club and changed their fortunes around.
West ham were supposed to be facing financial difficulties and were expected to lose a fair few players in the transfer window. The predicted exodus never happened and the Hammers managed to secure a second consecutive top half finish under the guidance of Zola and Clarke.
Wigan looked strong candidates for europe early in the season but losses of key players hurt them and they lacked the quality to sustain the challenge. Bolton were also a team which drifted into mid table obscurity, never really threatened either end of the table.
Blackburn and Portsmouth both had decent finishes last season although they struggled to keep it up this time around. Both teams found themselves in the relegation zone at different points of the year but both of them just made it to safety in time.
Stoke City were the surprise package of the season, they were predicted to go straight back down but they showed fantastic spirit and made themselves very difficult to beat at home. They had excellent wins over arsenal, spurs and villa and if not for their awful away form, they could have maybe challenged the top half.
Sunderland were threatened by relegation all through the season and were finally able to confirm safety on the final day.
Hull City looked like being the real story of the season, they had a fantastic win over Arsenal at the emirates and were top 4 at one point before going on a terrible run of form, 2 wins in 22 games i believe? lucky to stay up in the end.
West Brom played very good football but they just lacked any sort of cutting edge and could not compete with the physical side of the game, eventually relegated, bottom of the league.
Newcastle and Middlesbrough join Albion in the championship next season. Boro started the season well, they played excellent football but didn't get the results they deserved and it ended up with them slipping into trouble and they just lacked the firepower to escape.
I really don't know where to start with Newcastle, poor management, average players, terrible run of luck. They never looked like they could escape the trapdoor to the championship.
